Flex Banner Design for Maximum Impact

Flex banner design begins with viewing distance rather than layout, since a forecourt panel and a mall panel carry different amounts of text.

Why Banner Design Fails Before It Reaches the Printer

Most banners we see arriving as artwork are not badly designed.

This guide is the reference we send to designers, marketing managers and small business owners across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain before they hit send on their banner artwork.

Banners are the loudest asset a brand owns at ground level.

The Banner Family: Six Types and When to Use Each

Before you open design file, decide format.

Rollup Banners (Pull Up Banners)

The workhorse of UAE exhibitions and reception areas.

X Banners

A lightweight X shaped frame with grommets at each corner.

Tension Fabric Banners

Dye sublimated onto polyester fabric stretched over an aluminium frame. Creates a seamless, wrinkle free finish that photographs beautifully for social content. Ideal for step and repeat backdrops, media walls at product launches, and premium retail interiors in Dubai Mall or Yas Mall.

Mesh Vinyl (Outdoor Building Wraps)

Perforated PVC with roughly 30 to 40 percent open area so wind passes through. Essential for anything mounted outside above 3 metres, from construction hoardings in Business Bay to facade wraps during DSF.

Outdoor PVC Banners

Solid coated 510 to 610 gsm PVC with hemmed edges and brass eyelets every 500 mm.

Backlit Banners

Printed on translucent film for internal lighting from LED light boxes.

🎯

One Big Idea

A banner is not a brochure.

🔠

Legible from 5 Metres

Test your headline by shrinking file to fit on a mobile screen and viewing it at arm's length.

🎨

Contrast Beats Colour

Bright colours look great on a monitor.

🚫

Keep the Bottom Clear

The lower 200 mm of a rollup hide inside base cassette.

🧭

Vector, Always

Logos, icons and typography must be vector shapes.

Standard Sizing Chart for UAE Banners

These are the sizes our production team runs most weeks.

Ajman production note: Always add 20 mm bleed on every edge for outdoor PVC banners we hem and eyelet in house. Rollups printed on our roll fed machines need 10 mm bleed at the top and a full 200 mm safety zone at the bottom for the base cassette. Send us design at 100 percent scale in PDF/X 4 format with fonts outlined.

Resolution for Large Format: The 100 DPI Truth

The number one myth designers arrive with is that everything must be 300 DPI. That rule belongs to business cards, brochures and magazines viewed at reading distance.

Here is what actually matters: pixel density is a function of viewing distance. A person standing 3 metres from your banner cannot resolve dots finer than about 100 per inch. A driver 30 metres away needs closer to 20 DPI.

Practical Resolution Guidelines

The lazy but safe workflow is to design at half scale at 200 DPI, then export at final size at 100 DPI. Your file stays manageable and your prints stay sharp. If you supply us with a 3 GB TIFF for a rollup, we will still print it beautifully, but nobody had to work that hard.

The Viewing Distance Rule for Headline Sizing

This is the single most useful formula in banner design. It answers question every designer eventually asks: how big does my headline need to be? The rule of thumb comes from outdoor advertising research and it holds up in practice on every booth we build.

The rule: Minimum readable letter height in millimetres = viewing distance in metres x 8. So a banner meant to read comfortably from 5 metres away needs a headline at least 40 mm tall. From 10 metres away that becomes 80 mm. From 25 metres away, 200 mm.
3 m Needs 24 mm letters minimum
5 m Needs 40 mm letters minimum
10 m Needs 80 mm letters minimum
25 m Needs 200 mm letters minimum

Body copy, phone numbers and secondary content follow a lighter version of the same rule: viewing distance in metres x 4 gives you minimum. But honestly, secondary text should be avoided on banners. If a passer by can only spare a glance, they are not stopping to read three paragraphs. Put deeper story on your website and drive them there with a QR code sized at least 60 x 60 mm for a comfortable scan from 1.5 metres.

Colour Choices for UAE Outdoor Light

The UAE sun does two things to printed colour. It brightens everything by about a stop, which means mid tones look washed out. And it introduces a warm colour cast in the middle of the day that shifts blues towards teal and reds towards orange. Design decisions have to account for both.

Our production files are output in FOGRA51 CMYK for coated PVC and FOGRA47 for uncoated fabric. If your brand colours were specified in RGB or as PMS references, we run a conversion pass and provide a proof before printing. For any Pantone critical brand, expect a 3 percent to 8 percent shift when the colour lands on a physical substrate, because CMYK cannot hit every point in the Pantone gamut. Bright oranges, vivid greens and deep purples are the usual troublemakers.

For contrast, black on yellow, white on dark blue and yellow on black are the readability winners in daylight. Avoid red on green, red on blue, and yellow on white. On backlit banners increase saturation by roughly 10 percent in the file, because internal lighting bleaches perceived colour. On mesh vinyl viewed against a bright sky, dark backgrounds work better than white ones because the sky already dominates background luminance.

Booth Environment: DWTC, ADNEC and Regional Venues

Every UAE exhibition venue has its own quirks. Dubai World Trade Centre shell scheme booths have a back wall panel size of roughly 950 x 2380 mm per module, with joins every 1 metre horizontally. Design across joins carefully or accept a small visible seam. ADNEC in Abu Dhabi uses a similar modular system with 1000 x 2500 mm panels. Expo City Dubai runs custom stand builds where sizes are negotiated per hall.

Ceiling heights matter too. DWTC halls run 6 metres to the truss but shell scheme uprights are 2.5 metres. Any rigging above that height needs venue approval and structural drawings. When we produce banners for stand builds we always ask for the venue plan and the stand contractor drawings before finalising sizes. A 200 mm error on a hanging banner over a booth cost a full reprint and a very stressed client night before opening.

For mall activations at Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Mall, Yas Mall or City Centre Deira, the venue signage teams have their own approval process for any banner larger than 2 square metres. We handle technical files if you handle venue paperwork, and together we hit timeline.

Substrate and Ink Behaviour by Material

Different materials print differently. Coated 440 gsm PVC gives highest colour vibrancy and a smooth surface that photograph well under booth lighting. Block out 510 gsm PVC has a grey core that stop light from a window or spot bleeding through to the print, which is essential for rollups placed near daylight.

Polyester fabric at 210 gsm is dye sublimated, so the ink becomes part of the fibre rather than sitting on top. That gives fabric its wrinkle recovery and its washable durability, but slightly softens fine detail and desaturates deep blacks. If your design depends on a dense pure black background, ask us for a heavier 260 gsm fabric with a black backing, or switch to coated PVC.

Mesh vinyl comes in different open area percentages. 30 percent open holds print detail better and works well for facade wraps where photos matter. 40 percent and 50 percent open are for taller wind loads on skyscrapers and construction sites, but line art and text hold up better than photography at those open areas.

Longevity and When to Reprint

Nothing lasts forever in the UAE outdoors. Our production team gives clients a realistic honest window. Indoor rollups hold colour for 3 to 5 years with normal handling. Outdoor PVC banners with UV rated eco solvent inks last 12 to 24 months before visible fade, sooner if mounted south facing on a west facing wall. Mesh vinyl on a shaded facade can push 3 years. Fabric banners in air conditioned interiors will outlive campaign, but fabric outdoors is a 6 month product at best.

If you rotate branding for seasonal campaigns, Ramadan, National Day, DSF, Eid, we recommend printing a fresh set each cycle rather than reusing tired stock. The cost of a small reprint is smaller than the cost of your brand appearing faded next to a competitor with crisp new artwork. Store rollups upright in their carry bags, keep fabric folded loosely rather than tightly rolled, and never leave outdoor banners in direct sun during off season.

Banner Edge Finishing

Pole pockets are sewn channels at the top and bottom that a pole slides through, which spreads tension evenly and keeps the banner flat without any fixings.

Hem stitching folds and sews the edge so it cannot fray, and on any outdoor banner that hem is what decides whether it lasts a season.

Eyelets and strapping punch reinforced holes for ties or bungees, and the spacing matters more than the eyelet itself, since too few lets the edge ripple.

Rope sewn into the hem carries the load along the whole edge rather than at each fixing point, which is what large outdoor banners need.

Indoor Fixings

A velcro strip attaches a banner to a frame or a fabric wall with no holes at all, which suits exhibition stands where nothing can be pierced.

A d ring banner uses sewn rings for hanging from a ceiling or a rail, and it is the standard for indoor drops where the banner hangs free.

Flex Banner Design Considerations

Flex banner design begins with viewing distance rather than with layout. A banner read from thirty metres across a forecourt needs perhaps six words and a mark large enough to identify from a moving car, while one read from three metres in a mall can carry a full offer and a contact detail.

The same artwork usually has to work across banner standee, x stand, eye drop flags and fence branding as well.

Grommets are the metal eyelets punched along a banner edge so rope or ties carry the load instead of the fabric.

The material shapes the artwork too. Flex is a PVC coated fabric with a visible weave, so very fine detail and small type break up across the surface where they would hold on a rigid panel. Solid colour blocks and heavy type are what the material does well, and a design that fights that ends up looking softer than the file suggested. Production options for flex banner design work are set out alongside the material specifications. Wind slits, hem allowance and eyelet spacing all need to be planned into the artwork rather than added afterwards, since a design that runs to the very edge loses part of itself into the hem.
