Flag Printing Dubai and Flag Printing Abu Dhabi

Branding Blitz runs a dedicated flag production line in Ajman that handles dye sublimation printing, cut and sew, hardware assembly, and UAE wide dispatch under one roof. We produce flags for real estate open houses, retail rollouts, government events, national day celebrations, exhibitions at ADNEC and DWTC, hotel forecourts, roadside promotions, and every other context where a printed flag carrie a message to a public audience. This page explains every flag shape we produce, the fabric and hardware choices behind each, how UAE climate affects flag lifespan, and how to specify right combination for your use case.

The Flag Shapes We Produce

Flag shape is the first decision and it is driven by where the flag will stand and how far away you want it to be readable. The shapes below are the stable options we stock poles, bases, and tensioning systems for.

Tear Drop Flags

Tear drop flags have a rounded, droplet shaped outline that holds its form even when there is no wind. This is the most requested flag in the UAE for retail storefronts, showroom entrances, property launch sites, and exhibition booths because it stays readable continuously rather than only when a breeze catche it. Available in 2m, 3m, 4m, and 5m heights. The fabric tensions over a curved fibreglas pole that keeps shape locked. Tear drop flags suit portrait orientation logos and concise copy; they are not the right shape for wide landscape messaging. See our Tear Drop Flags product page for sizes and base options.

Sail Flags

Sail flags have a larger curved face than tear drops, with a top edge that swoop downward along pole. The increased surface area suits full colour artwork, photographic imagery, and multi element brand compositions that would feel crowded on a tear drop. Sail flags are common at beachfront properties, hotel entrances, and premium car dealerships where scale and visual weight matter. Available heights 3m, 4m, and 5m. Review our Sail Flags for fabric and base combinations.

Blade Flags

Blade flags have a straight vertical profile that reads as modern and corporate. The flat rectangular face projects a sharper, more architectural look than the curved tear drop or sail. Blade flags suit banking, technology, and professional services environments where the aesthetic alignment with the brand matters as much as the visibility. The straight edge also makes blade flags best choice when multiple flags are deployed in a row, as they create a clean repeated line rather than a cluttered curved mass. Check Blade Flags for pole assembly options.

Telescopic Flags

Telescopic flags use an extendable pole that adjust in height from roughly 2m to 4.5m. This makes them most flexible flag type for teams that deploy same flag across multiple venues with different ceiling heights or installation constraints. Trade show teams, roadshow activations, and mobile sales units use telescopic flags because one flag works for many contexts. The trade off is slightly less shape stability than a fixed pole flag; telescopic poles can sway more in high wind. Explore our Telescopic Flags for adjustable height ranges.

L Shape Flags

L shape flags bend pole at the top so the fabric hangs away from the vertical axis, creating a readable face that stay open regardless of wind. The shape is useful at exhibition booths, inside covered areas, and in any context with minimal air movement where tear drops and blades would hang limp. L shape flags also read from a wider viewing angle than straight vertical flags because the fabric is angled out toward viewer.

Pole Flags and Hoisting Flags

Pole flags (also called hoisting flags) are the traditional rectangular flags flown from fixed or free standing flagpoles using rope and toggle hardware. These are the flags used at government buildings, corporate headquarters, residential towers, and any permanent installation. UAE national flags flown at government buildings, hotel forecourts, and developer sales offices are almost always hoisting flags on aluminium or fibreglass masts. Standard sizes are 90 by 180cm and 150 by 300cm for residential and commercial masts respectively. Larger ceremonial sizes are produced to order. Our Hoisting Flags and Pole Flags cover both.

Wall Mounted Flags

Wall mounted flags project outward from a building facade on an angled aluminium bracket, creating visibility along streets and shopping lanes. The angle pushes flag face perpendicular to the wall, so it reads to pedestrians walking past rather than only to those looking up. Wall mounted flags are the standard choice in dense retail districts like JBR, The Beach, City Walk, and souks where street level attention matters. Bracket angles are typically 45 degrees; fabric sizes range from 60 by 90cm for boutique frontages to 90 by 150cm for larger storefronts.

Hand Flags

Hand flags are small handheld flags with a wooden or plastic stick, used as event giveaways, celebration accessories, and crowd engagement pieces. Common at national day parades, football matches, political rallies, and corporate events with a participatory element. Standard hand flag size is 20 by 30cm on a 40cm stick. Typical minimum order is 500 pieces because the per unit cost is very low at volume. Review Hand Flags for bulk pricing tiers.

Table Flags

Table flags are the small ceremonial flags displayed on boardroom tables, reception desks, executive offices, and conference panel settings. They are made from satin polyester for a premium finish, hemmed on all sides, and mounted on a polished metal or wooden stand. A single country flag or corporate flag in table flag format is a standard element in government offices, embassies, hotel meeting rooms, and any venue that signals formality. Our Table Flags cover single country, corporate, and set configurations.

Conference Flags

Conference flags are larger format table or floor flags used at panel discussions, press conferences, signing ceremonies, and stage settings. They often appear in sets of three to seven flags alongside speaker area, displaying home country, host country, partner countries, or organisational flags depending on the context. Conference flags are typically 60 by 90cm or larger and mounted on telescoping aluminium stands that collapse for transport.

Hanging Flags

Hanging flags suspend from ceilings, beams, or overhead structures in atriums, convention halls, hotel lobbies, and retail malls. They hang vertically and face both sides, so artwork must be designed to read correctly from front and back. Common in exhibition halls where multiple hanging flags create a coordinated visual language above booth area. Sizes start at 90 by 180cm and scale up to full floor height banners in the largest venues. Check Hanging Flags for hanging hardware and grommet options.

Stadium Flags

Stadium flags are designed for high energy sporting environments where they are waved vigorously by fans, subject to continuous motion, and exposed to outdoor conditions through long events. Stadium flags use reinforced stitching along all edges and a robust plastic or wooden pole that handles torque of enthusiastic waving. Standard sizes are 60 by 90cm for handheld stadium use and 150 by 240cm for installed stadium banners along seating sections. Our Stadium Flags cover both.

Festival and Finish Line Flags

Festival flags bring colour to music events, food festivals, cultural events, and open air celebrations. They tend to be decorative rather than branded, often produced in sets of mixed patterns that create a coordinated visual atmosphere rather than carrying a single message. Finish line flags are the specific subcategory used for races, tournaments, and fitness events, typically featuring chequered patterns, event branding, and oversized proportions for clear visibility at the finish point. See Festival Flags and Finish Line Flags.

Bunting Flags

Bunting consists of multiple small triangular or rectangular flags strung together on a continuous cord, used for decoration at weddings, retail grand openings, restaurant terraces, outdoor dining setups, and festive installations. UAE national day celebrations drive significant bunting volume annually in the last week of November. Bunting is typically produced in lengths of 5m, 10m, and 20m with 15 to 30 flags per string. Our Bunting Flags cover both generic decorative runs and customised branded strings.

Pennant Flags

Pennant flags are small triangular flags used as decorative rows strung across streets, promotional avenues, and retail strips. They differ from bunting in that they usually hang vertically from a single cord rather than in the garland style of bunting. Common in petrol station promotions, car dealership fence lines, and street level retail activations.

Toothpick Flags

Toothpick flags are miniature flags on wooden picks, typically 2 to 3cm in flag size, used in hospitality to mark cuisine origin on canapes, cheese platters, charcuterie boards, and buffet items. Hotels, catering companies, and restaurants use them for international themed events and national day menus. Standard minimum order is 500 picks. Review Toothpick Flags for hospitality specifications.

Car and Vehicle Flags

Vehicle flags fit to cars, SUVs, taxis, and fleet vehicles for mobile brand visibility. The main variants are window mount flags that clip to the rolled up window, aerial flags that attach to the radio aerial, and dashboard flags that sit on the dashboard or rear deck. UAE national day drives strong car flag volume, but car flags also serve dealership campaigns, delivery fleet branding, and real estate mobile promotions. Our Car Flags, Car Desert Flags, and Dashboard Flags cover full range.

Body Flags

Body flags are designed to be worn draped around a person as a cape style accessory, often at sporting events, national day celebrations, and large crowd gatherings where individual expression of affiliation matters. They are typically made from light polyester with reinforced corners and tie strings.

Dye Sublimation Printing Explained

Every flag we produce uses dye sublimation printing, a process where ink is transferred from paper to polyester fabric under heat and pressure. The ink converts to gas inside fibres and bonds permanently with the polyester at a molecular level. The result is fabric where the colour IS the fibre rather than a coating sitting on top of the fibre.

Practically, this matters for three reasons. First, dye sublimation flags do not crack, peel, or flake over time because there is no surface ink layer to degrade. Second, the colour shows through to the reverse side of the fabric, which is why single print run flags are readable from both sides without backing image being washed out. Third, the print is permanent against washing and weather in a way that screen printed or digitally surface printed flags are not.

The trade off is that dye sublimation only works on polyester fibres. Natural fibres like cotton cannot accept sublimation inks, so cotton flags are produced by other methods when authenticity to traditional materials is required. For UAE outdoor use, polyester is the correct choice regardless; the climate punishes natural fibres within weeks.

Fabric and Material Choices

The fabric underneath print determines how the flag flies, how long it lasts, and how it reads at distance. We stock four working fabrics for different scenarios.

Knitted polyester at 110gsm is the standard outdoor flag fabric. It is light enough to fly even in light wind, carries dye sublimation beautifully, and offers the best balance of durability and cost. Tear drop flags, sail flags, blade flags, and most outdoor event flags use knitted polyester.

Satin polyester at 85 to 120gsm produces a smooth, lustrous finish used for indoor ceremonial flags. Table flags, conference flags, and premium hanging displays use satin because the sheen reads as premium under indoor lighting. Satin is not suited to outdoor use; UV exposure dulls sheen within weeks.

Mesh polyester allows wind to pass through the fabric, reducing load on poles and hardware during strong coastal winds. Large format stadium flags, building side banners, and flags in exposed high wind environments such as Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina breakwater, and Abu Dhabi Corniche benefit from mesh when the flag dimension would otherwise put excessive strain on the pole system.

Reinforced polyester with heavier weave (150gsm plus) is used on hoisting flags, hand flags exposed to repeated motion, and any flag that needs to survive years of continuous service rather than weeks of campaign use. The thicker fabric costs more but doubles or triples service life in harsh conditions.

Bases, Poles, and Hardware

A flag perform only as well as its support hardware. The base holds pole, the pole holds fabric, and both need to match location and wind exposure.

Cross bases are lightweight folding metal bases used for indoor events, exhibition booths, and covered outdoor spaces where wind load is minimal. They assemble in seconds and transport easily between venues.

Water bases are hollow plastic bases that the user fills with water at the venue for ballast. They are the most common outdoor base because they ship light and stabilise heavy once filled. A standard water base filled provides roughly 15 to 20kg of ballast, sufficient for a 4m tear drop in moderate wind.

Concrete bases are solid poured bases used for permanent or semi permanent outdoor installations. They range from 20kg upward and do not require filling. We stock concrete bases for client collection or can supply them pre installed on delivery.

Ground spike bases drive into soft ground such as grass, sand, or loose soil. They are common at beach activations, park events, and golf tournaments where a solid base would damage surface.

Metal pole bases in polished finishes (round base and silver base variants) support table and conference flags with a refined appearance that suits boardroom and ceremonial contexts. See our Metal Pole Round Base and Metal Pole Silver Base for desk flag hardware.

Pole material is typically fibreglass for tear drops, sails, and blades because fibreglass flexes under wind load without snapping. Aluminium is used for telescopic flags and hoisting masts where rigidity and extension length matter more than flex. Wooden poles are reserved for premium ceremonial table flags and hand flags where aesthetic character counts for more than performance.

UAE Climate and Flag Lifespan

Dubai and Abu Dhabi expose flags to conditions that shorten life of any outdoor textile. Realistic expectations help buyers plan reorder cycles rather than being surprised when flags show wear.

Direct summer sun exposure degrades most polyester dyes by 15 to 25 percent over six months in the UAE, compared to around 10 to 15 percent in temperate climates. Even with UV stabilised inks, a flag left in full sun shows visible colour softening inside two summers. Planning a reorder every twelve to eighteen months is realistic for flags in prominent positions.

Sand carried on wind abrades flag edges and pole surfaces. Flags in exposed coastal and desert adjacent locations (Palm Jumeirah, Al Qudra, Saadiyat) typically show abrasion wear on the trailing edge of the fabric before any fade becomes visible. Reinforced edge stitching slows this but does not eliminate it.

Salt carried on coastal air accelerates corrosion on metal hardware. Aluminium poles and metal bases at beach locations should be rinsed monthly to extend their life; without rinsing they develop surface oxidation within months.

High summer temperatures reach levels that stress adhesives in some hardware. Our bases and brackets are specified for UAE climate with adhesives rated for continuous exposure above 50 degrees Celsius. Generic imported hardware often uses adhesives rated for more temperate climates and fails within a season in UAE conditions.

UAE National Day Flag Collection

Every November and early December, UAE National Day drives largest flag order volume of the calendar year. Government entities, private companies, schools, shopping malls, residential communities, and individual households all commission flag collateral for the commemoration period. Our national day range covers far more than the standard rectangular UAE flag.

Standard UAE Flags in hoisting format for flagpoles, wall mount format for facades, hand held format for parade participation, and table flag format for boardroom and desk display. Our UAE Flags product page covers standard specifications across sizes.

UAE Flags A4 Size are a specific small format popular for desk placement, classroom use, and car interior display. See UAE Flags A4 Size. Flags sit alongside other outdoor formats at most events. A flag sign at the entrance and banner Dubai organisers hang along the approach are usually specified together so the colours match across both.

UAE String Flags Bunting in 5m, 10m, and 20m lengths for community centres, retail storefronts, office corridors, and residential balcony decoration. See UAE String Flags Bunting.

UAE Flag scarves in satin and velvet finishes, with and without tassels, worn as national day accessories by staff, students, and attendees at official events. We produce satin scarves, velvet scarves, and heavy satin variants with silver tassel detail.

UAE Flag wristbands in silicone and ribbon formats for school distribution, corporate events, and giveaway campaigns. See silicone wristbands and ribbon wristbands.

UAE Flag metal badges and rosettes for formal dress and ceremonial wear during government and corporate events. Our rectangular metal badges, map shape badges, and rosettes cover formal wear range.

Production lead times for national day orders tighten significantly as November progresses. We recommend placing national day orders by the first week of November to guarantee delivery before December 2. Orders placed after the third week of November can often be fulfilled but only on standard ranges; custom designs and unusual sizes need longer lead times that the last two weeks of November cannot accommodate.

Choosing the Right Flag by Use Case

The shape and material combination should flow from where and how the flag will be used rather than from preference alone. Practical pairings we see work well:

  • Retail storefront: Tear drop or sail flag in 3m height, knitted polyester fabric, water base for easy daily setup and teardown.
  • Car dealership forecourt: Blade flags in rows of five or seven, 4m height, knitted polyester, water or concrete bases depending on whether flags are moved for service.
  • Hotel entrance: Hoisting flags on permanent aluminium masts, 150 by 300cm fabric, reinforced polyester, professional mast installation with internal halyard.
  • Exhibition booth: Tear drop or L shape flags in 2 to 3m height, cross bases for quick assembly, telescopic variants for portable rosters.
  • Property launch event: Sail flags in 4 to 5m height along access roads, water bases, complemented by bunting across the entrance gates.
  • Corporate office reception: Satin table flags on polished metal stands, single country or company flag, positioned behind reception desk.
  • National day corporate activation: Mix of hand flags for staff and visitor distribution, bunting for corridor decoration, plus a hoisting UAE flag at the building entrance.
  • School celebration day: Bunting for classrooms and corridors, hand flags for children, plus wristbands or rosettes for staff and ceremonial personnel.
  • Sports event: Stadium flags for spectator sections, finish line flags at the race conclusion, branded team flags from sail or blade formats at team areas.
  • Government ceremonial event: Conference flags for stage settings, hoisting flags on external masts, table flags for signing tables.

Sizes, Artwork, and Ordering

Flag artwork must be supplied as vector files (AI, EPS, PDF) or high resolution raster (300dpi at final printed size). Designs for sublimation print need to be laid out as CMYK with a 5cm bleed on all sides to allow for hem folding and tensioning. Typography in flag artwork should be set at weights of at least 5 to 10 percent of the flag height for readability at typical viewing distances.

Standard sizes are stocked in hardware and tension systems, so choosing a standard size generally ship faster and at lower cost than custom dimensions. Custom sizes are produced to order and require proportionate hardware that we manufacture alongside flag.

Order flow is by WhatsApp, email, or phone. We supply a digital proof before production begins. Once approved, production runs 3 to 5 working days for standard flags, 5 to 7 days for custom sizes with hardware, and 24 to 48 hours on our rush line for urgent requirements when existing hardware stock supports shape.

Delivery Across the Emirates

Flag orders ship from our Ajman facility on our daily UAE courier network. Dubai addresses receive same evening delivery for orders placed before 12pm. Abu Dhabi routes deliver next working day with morning arrival in most city locations. Sharjah, Ajman, and Umm Al Quwain often receive same day delivery within working hours. Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Al Ain are on a two day cycle.

For large orders requiring installation (permanent hoisting masts, wall mount brackets, or multi flag dealership runs), we schedule installation visits separately from the flag delivery itself. Installation teams carry tools, anchors, and replacement hardware for on site adjustments.

International dispatch to GCC countries (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain) is handled through air freight logistics partners for urgent orders or sea freight for bulk runs where transit time is less critical.

Flag Accessories and Maintenance

Flags rarely fail completely; they age, fray, and fade to the point where they hurt brand more than they help. Planned maintenance extends flag service life and keeps presentation consistent.

Replacement fabric panels are a low cost extension for hoisting and pole installations. The pole and base system typically outlasts multiple fabric cycles; swapping just fabric keeps installation current without full hardware replacement. We maintain stocked replacement fabric on standard brand orders for rapid turnaround on replacements.

Spare poles, joints, and bases cover common failure points for portable flag systems. Tear drop flags carried to multiple events eventually develop stress cracks at pole joints; having spare parts in inventory prevents event deployment failure when a part goes at the worst moment.

Base ballast and weighting systems can upgrade over time. Water bases used outdoors in windy conditions sometimes benefit from upgrading to concrete bases after a season of operation reveal actual wind exposure. We stock concrete bases for progressive upgrade of existing tear drop and sail flag inventories.

Cleaning maintenance matters for satin and premium fabrics. Table flags and conference flags accumulate dust and fingerprints that dull appearance over months of use. Gentle cleaning with appropriate textile cleaners restores appearance; harsh cleaners dull finish further. We can re press flags showing storage creases as a short turnaround service.

Storage between events affects flag life as much as active use. Flags stored loosely folded develop permanent creases that never fully release; flags stored rolled in their original transport cases remain deployment ready. Brief storage guidance to teams responsible for event gear prevents avoidable damage.

Flag Rental for One Off Events

Not every event justifies buying flags that will see limited use. For single events, brand activations, and one off campaigns, flag rental can be more economical than purchase.

We offer rental of tear drop, sail, blade, and L shape flag systems in our stocked inventory. Rental includes printed branded fabric produced specifically for the client event, along with the pole, base, and transport case. After the event, the gear returns to our facility and the branded fabric is disposed of or returned to the client per their preference.

Rental economics typically favour buying once annual use exceeds three to five events. Below that threshold, rental saves warehousing, transport, and maintenance burden of owning portable flag systems. Above that threshold, purchase becomes better economic choice because the sunk cost of fabric production is amortising across more uses.

Mixed models work for many clients where some displays justify purchase (everyday storefront tear drop, permanent hoisting mast) while specific one off event displays run on rental. The account view lets us balance inventory versus rental appropriately for each context.

Common Flag Ordering Pitfalls

  • Specifying shape before use case. Clients often request a shape they have seen elsewhere without matching it to their specific installation context. A tear drop in a windles covered area looks identical to one on a windy forecourt because the tension system holds shape; a rectangular flag in the same two locations looks completely different. Specify use case first, then we recommend shape.
  • Under sizing flags for their viewing distance. A 2m tear drop is clearly visible at 10m but loses readability past 25m. Flags on highway adjacent properties or at large exhibition halls need 4m or 5m sizes to carry at realistic viewing distances. Measure distance from the flag position to the typical viewer and scale accordingly.
  • Using indoor fabrics for outdoor installations. Satin is gorgeous indoors and disappoints outdoors. If the flag will spend any significant time in direct sun, specify knitted polyester regardless of how the satin looks in swatch form.
  • Ignoring wind exposure. Coastal UAE locations experience wind loads that ground bases in basic water filled form struggle to handle. Flags in Dubai Marina, JBR, Palm Jumeirah, Saadiyat, and Yas locations often need concrete bases or anchored installations rather than water bases.
  • Ordering national day stock in late November. Stock runs thin across the industry from mid November onward. Ordering UAE national day flags in the first half of the month guarantees full range availability; the last two weeks see intermittent stock outs on popular sizes and variants.
  • Relying on single sided print for rotating flags. Hoisting flags on external masts rotate with the wind and face both ways throughout a service day. Single sided print shows reverse image mirrored from the back. Specify double sided print with a blocker layer if the flag will be viewed from both sides at equal probability.
  • Underestimating hardware weight. Concrete bases and aluminium hoisting masts are heavy; clients often plan for pedestrian collection and discover at pickup that they need a trolley or vehicle with a tailgate. Confirm delivery when the hardware weight exceeds typical office lift capacity.

Choosing a Flag Format for the Job

Most people arrive knowing the occasion rather than the format, so it is worth setting out what each shape is actually good at. Tear drop flags are the curved pole droplet shape, produced here in 2m, 3m, 4m and 5m heights, and they are the default for shop frontages and roadside promotion because the shape holds its outline even when the wind drops. Sail flags are the larger curved face version of the same idea and read from further away. Blade flags take a straight vertical edge and look more corporate than either, which is why exhibition stands tend to specify them. Where ceiling height varies between venues, telescopic flags adjust on an extending pole rather than committing you to one size.

Indoor and covered spaces have their own answers. L shape flags sit at an angle that works under a roof, and hoisting flags run on rope and toggle for permanent flagpole installations. Pole flags cover the standard rectangular mast range including the 4x4 flag sizes most commonly ordered for government and corporate forecourts. Wall mounted flags project from a building facade where there is no room for a base, and hand flags are the bulk distribution format for parades and national day handouts, usually ordered in the thousands rather than the dozens.

Ceremonial and event work splits again. Table flags and conference flags use a premium satin finish because they sit at close viewing distance in boardrooms and on stage. Hanging flags suit atriums, lobbies and mall interiors where the flag is seen from below. Stadium flags and block flags are built for crowd handling and rough treatment. Festival flags and finish line flags cover celebration and racing formats, while bunting flags and pennant flags give you a continuous decorative run along a street, a retail aisle or a venue perimeter.

At the smaller end, toothpick flags mark canapes and buffet items for hospitality clients. Vehicle branding has its own set: car flags and car desert flags for exterior mounting, buggy flags for off road use, and dashboard flags for the interior. Body flags are the wearable cape format for crowd participation at national day and sporting events. As an advertising flag company we produce all of it in house and deliver across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain and Al Ain.

Getting Started

Share your flag requirement via WhatsApp, email, or phone, with your use case, rough quantity, and any existing artwork. We respond with format recommendations, specification, and pricing within business hours. For national day orders, plan ahead and place the order in early to mid November. For permanent installations, we can arrange a site visit to confirm mast position, wall bracket mounting, and any structural considerations before production starts. Contact us and we will match specification to the job rather than selling you a shape you did not need.

Flag Poles, Bases and Stands

A flag staff or pole is chosen against wind exposure rather than flag size. Telescopic aluminium suits portable and event use, while a fixed steel pole is required for anything permanent at height.

A flag pole stand for indoor and ceremonial use is usually a weighted disc or cross base in chrome or brass. A UAE flag stand for offices, reception areas and government settings is one of our steadiest lines, supplied as a complete set with pole, base and flag.

Outdoor bases need real weight. A concrete filled or water filled base is the practical answer for event use, since a light base tips in the wind that any flag is designed to catch.

Formats and Supply

Feather flag printing produces tall curved flags used outside showrooms, sports venues and beach events. They read from a distance and they move, which is what makes them effective, and they need a base matched to the ground surface.

Kite beach flags and other coastal installations face salt air and constant wind, so stainless fittings and a heavier fabric weight are worth specifying rather than the standard.

A car with flag mount for National Day and events uses a clip fitted to the window frame, and these are ordered in very large quantities in the weeks before December.

As UAE flag suppliers in Dubai we hold stock year round rather than only in season, and flags for sale online through us are delivered across the emirates rather than requiring collection.
